The TOPCon (Tunnelling Oxide Passivated Contact) technology used in the new FuturaSun Silk® Nova modules is the innovative solution that now stands as an alternative to PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell) cells, a technology that, from 2016 until the present day, has dominated the market and has been the predominant choice of manufacturers.

The major difference between these two technologies is that the backside of the TOPCon cell is fully passivated, including the contacts, while in the PERC cell the contacts are not passivated. Passivation of the contacts makes it possible to reduce the number of electrons that, once generated by photons, are scattered because they are absorbed by impurities in the cell and thus cannot be “extracted” from the electrical circuit.
But the innovations do not only concern the back of the cell. The front side of TOPCon cells has also been improved with the introduction of a selective emitter to further improve cell efficiency.
Silk® Nova modules with TOPCon technology
Thanks to TOPCon technology, it is therefore possible to increase the efficiency of the cells, and this then translates into higher efficiency of the PV module: thus, for the same size, one can go from a 410 Watt PERC to a 430 or 440 Watt TOPCon.
A clear advantage and a major step forward that heralds 2024 as the year of TOPCon cells, a technology that will assume a dominant role in the photovoltaic market. Therefore, FuturaSun has expanded its range with several TOPCon module solutions:
